What happens on your first oncology visit?

At the first appointment, the oncologist will diagnose you and talk about possible treatment options. The doctor will tell you the treatment available for you, its effects and what are its possible side effects. Then the oncologist will recommend to you a treatment course and talk about when the treatments should take place.

What does cancer treatment feel like?

During the Chemotherapy course side effects like fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea, bowel issues such as constipation or diarrhea, hair loss, mouth sores, skin, and nail problems may appear. Moreover, you may also have trouble concentrating or remembering things. There can also be nerve, muscle effect, and hearing changes. You will be at increased risk of infections.

 

What are the available treatment options for cancer patients?

Cancer treatment options include

  1. Surgery – The aim of surgery is to remove the cancer cells as much as possible.
  2. Chemotherapy – In Chemotherapy, we use drugs to kill cancer.
  3. Radiation therapy – In Radiation therapy, a beam of intense energy is used to kill cancer cells.4
  4. Bone marrow transplant or BMT – It is a medical procedure to replace bone marrow that has been destroyed, damaged, or infected. In it, blood stem cells are transplanted which travel to bone marrow and produce new blood cells and helps in the growth of new marrow.
  5. Immunotherapy- It is a treatment in which the whole-body immune system is used to fight cancer.
  6. Hormone therapy or hormonal therapy or endocrine therapy- In it, we use medicines to block or lower the number of hormones in the body to slow down or abort the growth of cancer.
  7. Targeted drug therapy – In this treatment drugs are used which are designed to target only the cancer cells without affecting normal.
  8. Cryoablation – It is a process in which we use extreme cold to destroy infected.

What are common ways to treat cancer?

Surgery, Chemotherapy, Radiation therapy, targeted drug therapy, immunotherapy, laser, hormonal therapy, cryoablation are some common treatments for cancer.

What other treatment is there besides chemotherapy?

Treatment 1: Surgery.

How can we boost our immune system to fight cancer?

  1. Don’t smoke or if you are a smoker, you should quit smoking
  2. Eat a healthy diet (fruits and vegetables).
  3. Do regular exercise and maintain health.
  4. If you drink alcohol, lower or limit drinking
  5. Get an adequate amount of sleep
